This is the best Apple TV device yet, but its flag is still firmly planted in Camp Apple, and our picks will serve the average buyer better at less expense. Even the more affordable $130 version is still significantly more expensive than our picks, and despite the slick appeal of the Apple TV interface and its interrelated services, the box is not abundantly more powerful (where streaming is concerned) than something like the Roku Ultra. As usual, the latest Apple TV 4K impressed us with its zippy processing and intuitive user interface, but it still puts Apple’s ecosystem of content at the forefront-which is a boon for hardcore Apple users, but less desirable for folks who aren’t subscribed to services like Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and Apple Music. And both are powered by the same A15 bionic chip found in some of Apple’s phones and earbuds. Both boxes support 4K resolution, can handle Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos content, and include the newer Siri-based remote control with a standard directional keypad. Without improvements to the Ultra’s processing components, the more affordable Streaming Stick 4K and 4K+ are still more practical, and holistically we prefer the latest Chromecast experience to what Roku offers.Īpple released two third-generation Apple TV 4K boxes in 2022: A $130 WiFi-only version with 64 GB storage and a $150 version with 128 GB storage and an ethernet (LAN) port.

Beyond that, the new Ultra doesn’t significantly upgrade or change the user experience, and we still think this box is overkill for most people-unless you really need features like an Ethernet (LAN) port and expandable storage.

The Voice Remote Pro complements the Roku Ultra handsomely: It has a built-in rechargeable battery (though it uses Micro-USB and not USB-C), a microphone that can be always-on or push-to-talk, two buttons you can program to be custom shortcuts, a remote finder, and a private listening mode with a headphone jack. However, the new Roku Ultra (which is a box, not an HDMI stick) comes bundled with Roku’s Voice Remote Pro for $100. Our testing revealed that the device itself is just a refresh of the 2020 version, delivering essentially the same hardware and processing as the older model. If you’re not able to wait two weeks for this design, you can buy Google’s remote here for $19.99, Nvidia’s Shield TV remote here for $29.99, and Amazon’s Fire TV remote will also work in a pinch with most devices. In 2022, Roku released a new Roku Ultra-sort of. Hold down the home and back buttons at the same time to trigger the pairing process, and then you can pair through your device’s Bluetooth menu using either your current remote or Google’s phone-based remote app.

Once you’ve got the remote in hand, the key thing to remember is how to initiate the pairing process. It’s certainly come in handy since my puppy decided that remotes are chew toys. Still, for $16 to have a backup that doesn’t waste an entire streaming stick, I feel it was worth the wait. It took over two weeks for my order to arrive in the US on the default shipping option. Your results may vary, as we’ve not been able to test this.

Do note, though, that some have reported that using this remote with Walmart’s streamers can cause issues with software updates, where an update to the new remote could brick it. How’s the performance? In terms of speed and connection, it’s identical to the G10 sample I tested and the G10 remote that ships with the Walmart Onn devices. The core functionality is all there, and even IR functions will work on the Chromecast with Google TV if you’ve previously set up a Chromecast remote for the same functions.

Assistant, watchlist, settings, navigation, all work flawlessly. The rest of the buttons work just fine, though. Your results may vary, though, as I’ve had these be finicky in the past with these specific buttons. Unfortunately, they also don’t respond to the handy Button Remapper app.

Pressing them won’t open any apps, just give you a satisfying little click. Those buttons, at least on Google’s Chromecast dongle, don’t actually do anything by default. Mecool’s version of the G10 remote is based on the reference design, using identical hardware, just with the company’s logo plastered along the bottom and customized buttons for YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, and Google Play.

Luckily, there’s a way to buy it without wasting money on an entire additional streamer, as Mecool is selling its Google TV G10 remote on its own, and it works as an excellent replacement remote for virtually any Android TV device. The Google G10 reference remote is due to arrive on more Android TV devices, but sadly it’s not sold officially as a universal replacement.
